Medical Education & Research – Scientific Discovery

20 Years of Expertise : Every Step Performed in Hong Kong By Doctors

Does a clinic’s research contribution matter to your surgical outcome?

Yes. Active research signifies a practice committed to advancing the field, not just applying established techniques. It often translates directly to patient care through refined technology, higher safety standards, and access to next-generation protocols. Our work ensures your treatment is informed by scientifically-validated innovation.

Sara’s Comment

Our clinic contributes to the foundational science of hair restoration, developing tools and protocols adopted globally. Our documented innovations include pioneering the hand-held design laser for precision hairlines and conducting early clinical research on adipose-derived stem cells for hair loss. This commitment to evidence-based research ensures our patients benefit from techniques grounded in scientific discovery.

Content-index

What are our key documented contributions to hair restoration?

Our research portfolio addresses both surgical precision and regenerative biology.

  • Instrumentation Innovation: We invented the hand-held laser for hairline design, a tool that provides surgeons with unparalleled precision in planning and has since become a standard in global practice.

  • Pioneering Regenerative Research: We were among the first globally to clinically investigate adipose-derived stem cells for hair loss treatment as early as 2008, long before it became a commercial trend.

  • Cross-Disciplinary Application: We are a leading center in successfully utilizing hair follicle-derived stem cells to treat vitiligo, demonstrating expertise in both hair restoration and advanced medical dermatology.

How does this research directly impact surgical techniques and patient care?

Scientific discovery drives practical refinement in our operating room and consultation suite.

  • Enhanced Precision: Tools like our design laser enable millimeter-accurate hairline planning, a critical factor in achieving natural, aesthetic results.

  • Evidence-Based Adjuvants: Our early stem cell research allows us to critically evaluate and ethically integrate legitimate regenerative protocols, distinguishing science from marketing.

  • Broader Medical Expertise: Our work in conditions like vitiligo reflects a deep understanding of follicular biology and immunology, informing a more comprehensive approach to all hair and scalp disorders.

Why choose a clinic that invests in scientific research?

Partnering with a research-active practice offers distinct, long-term advantages.

  • Access to Proven Innovation: You benefit from techniques and technologies vetted through the scientific process.

  • Future-Ready Care: Our foundational work ensures we can responsibly evaluate and adopt true medical advancements as they emerge.

  • Treatment by Pioneers: Your care is directed by surgeons who help write the protocols other clinics later follow.

1. Donor Site Hair Loss After Hair Transplant, 2008

Publication : 2009 | Hair Transplant Forum International Vol 19:2, Mar/Apr

Presentation : 2008 | ISHRS Annual Scientific Meeting Montreal Canada

Hair loss may occur in the donor areas after hair transplant surgery. While most hair transplant surgeons labeled this as telogen effluvium, Marzola and Vogel described the effluvium as anagen. Our study presented at the ISHRS Annual Meeting supported this alternative view through clinical documentation and histological analysis.

2. Hand-held Laser Hairline Placement, 2008

Publication :
2008 | Hair Transplant Forum International Vol 18:5, Sep/Oct
2009 | Hair Restoration for Asians, Pathomvanich & Imagawa Springer

Hairline design requires precise symmetry for optimal facial framing. We developed a hand-held laser device to facilitate accurate hairline placement in 2008. The device entered commercial production in 2009 and has been adopted by hair transplant centers internationally, providing a solution for consistent and symmetrical hairline design.

3. Adipose Stem Cell Injection for Hair Loss, 2008

Publication :
2008 | Hair Transplant Forum International Vol 19:2, Mar/Apr
2009 | Hair Restoration for Asians, Pathomvanich & Imagawa Springer

This investigation explored the potential of adipose-derived stem cells for hair regeneration. While abdominal wall fat aspirate provided a convenient source of regenerative cells with autologous advantages, the study identified limitations in differentiation protocols. The activation component of available systems failed to reliably trigger stromal vascular fraction differentiation into hair follicle tissue.

4. Vitiligo Re-pigmentation By FUT, 2010

Publication :
2010 | Hair Transplant Forum International Vol 20:2, Mar/Apr

This case study demonstrated the application of single hair grafting from Follicular Unit Transplantation for vitiligo repigmentation. The research suggested differential immunological responses among melanocyte populations within hair follicles. Optimal grafting technique focused on the middle one-third of the follicle, which contains the highest concentration of outer root sheath melanocytes.

5. Prevent Facial Swelling After Hair Transplant, 2009

Publication :
2009 | Hair Transplant Forum International Vol 19:3, May/Jun

We developed a specialized protocol to address postoperative facial swelling resulting from tumescent fluid migration. While tumescent anesthesia protects deep structures during graft implantation, fluid drainage to facial areas can cause significant swelling and bruising. Our protocol significantly reduced these complications while maintaining surgical safety.

6. New Landmarks in Hairline Design, 2010

Presentation :
2023 | WFI Annual Meeting, Bangkok Thailand

While Western aesthetic principles follow Da Vinci’s Golden Rule of Thirds for facial proportions, our analysis of multiple ethnic groups revealed variations in ideal hairline positioning. Based on extensive photographic analysis of diverse facial types, we developed modified landmarks for hairline design applicable across different ethnic backgrounds.

7. The Best Way in Graft Storage, 2010

Presentation :
2010 | ISHRS Annual Scientific Meeting Boston USA

Our investigation compared graft storage methods to optimize viability during hair transplantation procedures. The study demonstrated that saline storage over ice coolant effectively reduced oxygen consumption for up to 6 hours. While refrigerator storage provided an alternative, we identified risks of temperature fluctuation below 0°C that could compromise graft integrity.
