My Hair Loss History

I was suffering from female pattern hair loss, with noticeable thinning over the top of my head. Styling my hair was always a struggle. This frustrating problem runs in my family — and I’ve watched some of my siblings spend over $600,000 on hairpieces and ongoing maintenance, not to mention the time and emotional energy involved.

Like many others, I tried everything — Chinese medicine, Western treatments, shampoos, tonics, hair therapies — but none gave me the lasting result I hoped for.

I’ve always hated the idea of surgery and pain, which is why it took me so long to seriously consider a hair transplant. But eventually, I realized I wanted something permanent, natural, and worthwhile. After researching carefully, I chose the FUT (Strip) method with Dr. Bertram because I wanted the best possible outcome.

The Procedure

When I arrived at the clinic, I was nervous. The staff were warm and professional. After washing my hair with an antiseptic shampoo, the doctor gave me some pills to help me relax — they worked wonderfully. I was asleep through most of the procedure, waking only occasionally to stretch or have a light snack.

The doctor and his team transplanted 2,200 grafts to the top of my head, and to my surprise, I didn’t feel any pain at all during the surgery.

I left the clinic with a headband and a dressing over the donor area at the back. That night, I slept normally — in my bed, not on a chair — which I wasn’t expecting. That was in April 2008, and I still remember it clearly.

The Day After

The next morning, I felt some discomfort where the strip was taken, but it settled quickly after I took just Panadol as advised. I didn’t feel any pain where the grafts were placed. The only other medication I needed was a short course of antibiotics, just to prevent any sweat-related infections.

I returned to the clinic the next day for hair washing and wound care. They told me to wear the headband for two more days to prevent swelling. That same day, I was already back to shopping and dining like usual.

I washed my hair as instructed over the next few days. By day five, Dr. Ng removed the stitches, and even the tight feeling around the donor area disappeared. My recovery was smooth and uneventful. When I returned to work a few days later, none of my coworkers could tell I’d had anything done.

Waiting for the New Hair

To be honest, the hardest part of the whole process was the waiting. It felt like forever, but around four months later, I could feel new hairs growing when I ran my fingers through my scalp — that was incredibly reassuring.

By eight months, even my stylist noticed the improvement. Today, I can style my hair however I like, and I’ve noticed that the new hair feels stronger than my original hair.

Almost Invisible Scar

As for the scar? I can’t even see it myself. My friends tried to find it but couldn’t — because The doctor used a special technique that allows hair to grow right through the scar. The result? It’s practically invisible.

I’m honestly so happy with the result, and I feel truly lucky to have been accepted as a patient — The doctor was very selective, which I now understand is part of why the outcomes are so consistent.

Sharing My Experience

I’ve seen how hair loss can affect people at any age, especially younger patients. I’ve met families where children are emotionally affected by early-onset baldness. Even after trying every supplement, vitamin, and hair therapy available, the results are often disappointing — unless you’re a good candidate for transplant.

For those who are suitable, new hair typically begins to appear between 8 to 12 months after the procedure. I’ve witnessed dramatic changes in their appearance, styling, and most of all — confidence. That’s what makes this work so rewarding.

Now, as a Hair Transplant Consultant, I’m proud to share my story and answer questions for those considering the same journey. I can honestly say: hair transplant is a simple, safe, and life-changing procedure — as long as it’s done by the right hands, for the right candidate.

And if you’d like to talk, I’m happy to show you the result in person.
