1. AREA of bald area to be transplanted
2. DENSITY of graft desired per sq.cm
3. Amount of available DONOR HAIR
4. Patients’ EXPECTATION
During the consultation the patient and doctor need to first agree on where to transplant. Obviously the patient may want to fill up every empty spots. However the following factors must be considered:
The purpose of hair transplant is to create a visual illusion of not being bald. When there is not enough donor hair or the budget limited, the patiens must decide which area should be transplanted first, the hairline or the crown.
During consultation our doctor may suggest transplanting certain areas to receive the maximum coverage and best visual improvement.
A full head of hair appearance is Maintained until approximately 50% of the original hair volume is lost. Thinning is apparent when light is reflected from the scalp, creating a “see-through”. There is a critical density below which no visual impact will be perceived. Those with a limited budget or donor hair should make a compromise on area but not density.
Different density will be requires to achieve expected result in different ethnic groups.

Donor supply is the ultimate limiting factor in hair transplantation for male pattern baldness (MPB) patients.
Even in late stage of balding there is still have a rim of hairs at the sides and back of the head. This is labelled as the “Safe Donor Area” that is expected to be permanently covered with hair for a lifetime. Grafts must be harvested here in order to provide permanent coverage when transplanted to the recipient area.

In pursuit of low prices, many black market clinics operate like high-speed factories — performing multiple FUE procedures a day using unsupervised technicians, often without proper medical oversight. To maximize profits, they focus on quantity over quality, cutting corners where it matters most: your donor area.
Unlike FUT, which harvests from a narrow, genetically permanent zone, FUE (including ARTAS robotic) requires a much larger donor surface to extract the same number of grafts. Ethical surgeons limit extraction to the Safe Donor Zone — the area most likely to retain hair for life.
Unfortunately, to achieve a high graft count quickly and cheaply, some centers extract far beyond this zone, harvesting fragile follicles that are not genetically stable. These hairs are destined to thin or fall out over time, leading to disappointing results and irreversible donor depletion.
This reckless approach violates the true purpose of hair transplant surgery — to provide long-lasting, natural, and medically sound results. Worse still, once the permanent donor follicles are wasted, they cannot be replaced. Even the best surgeon cannot undo this damage.

Take as an example – to achieve the same result in hairline restore using FUE for a AGA Class III patient.
Center A proposes to transplant 2,800 hairs for repair. The average charge is HKD 15 per hair. With an expected graft survival rate of 90% ( 2,520 hairs will finally grow ), the actual cost of transplanting each surviving hair in Center A is therefore 2800 x 15 / 2520 = HKD 16.6
Center B charges HKD 10 per hair but graft survival rate is only 60% . To achieve the same final effect as 2,520 hairs, 4,200 hairs ( 2,520 / 60% ) must be extracted. The total cost is: 42,00 x 10 = HKD 42,000 or HKD 16.6 per hair
As a result, the actual cost of Center A and Center B is the same, but Center B waste you an additional 1,400 precious hair follicles for nothing. Is it worth it?
Many clients asked about hair follicle cloning. Unfortunately there has been no progress in the past ten years.
Even if cloning is available in the future, it won’t be cheap. So why not put more thought into how to properly utilize your limited number of permanent hair follicles and avoid waste.
