Your Step-by-Step Guide from Preparation to Procedure
Home » Day of Procedure
Sara’s Comment:How should you prepare for a hair transplant, and what actually happens on the day? A smooth, successful procedure starts with careful preparation and is guided by a clear, professional protocol. Here is your complete guide to the day of your FUE hair transplant.
Continue all regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Stop: Blood thinners (Aspirin, Plavix, Vitamin E, certain Chinese herbs).
Discuss: If you take Propranolol for blood pressure, speak with your doctor about a temporary alternative.
For FUE: Trim the donor area (back/sides) short, or we can do this for you. You may dye your hair a few days prior.
For FUT/Strip: Leave hair about 1 inch long to cover the donor site after surgery.
Wash your hair with the provided antiseptic shampoo.
Do not use minoxidil (Rogaine, Regaine) or similar topical treatments.
Do not drink alcohol.
Get a normal night’s sleep.
Eat a light breakfast. Avoid tea and coffee.
Wear a button-down or polo shirt (not a t-shirt).
Bring your phone/MP3 player and headphones for music.
Bring a loose, clean hat or bandana for the journey home (we also provide a cap).
Notify us immediately if you feel unwell or have a fever.
Our team will welcome you, finalize paperwork, and answer any last-minute questions.
You will change into a surgical garment.
Your scalp will be washed again with antiseptic solution.
The doctor will confirm and mark your hairline design and surgical plan with you.
You will receive light oral medication (a relaxant and pain-preventer) to ensure comfort. We do not use routine antibiotics.
The donor area is mapped and hair density is measured with a digital tool (Folliscope).
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with Level I Conscious Sedation.
You will be awake and comfortable throughout, able to speak, drink water, and take breaks.
We use a painless injection technique (small needles, slow injection, vibration distraction) and monitor your vital signs continuously.
You will be positioned face-down on a comfortable surgical chair.
We use 0.8mm titanium punches (0.7mm for finer Caucasian hair) for extraction, minimizing scarring and transection.
A special fluid (tumescence) is injected to lift and protect the scalp during extraction.
Grafts are harvested one-by-one with precision.
Extracted grafts are immediately placed under 10x microscopes. Technicians carefully trim excess tissue and sort them by size (1, 2, or 3-hair grafts).
Grafts are stored in an ATP-enriched solution to maintain cellular energy and maximize survival.
You are welcome to inspect your own grafts under the microscope during a break—many patients appreciate seeing their follicles up close.
The doctor makes tiny incisions (slits) in the recipient area using surgical loupes for magnification. The angle, direction, and density are planned to match your natural hair growth.
Grafts are meticulously placed using “No-Touch” forceps or “Stick-and-Place” techniques to ensure precise, dense packing without damaging the follicles.
Grafts outside the body has a limited survival time and must be implanted ASAP. Currently we are using 3 different Insertion Techniques.
Final Check: The surgical team spends 20-30 minutes checking every graft and securing any that may have loosened.
Post-Op Care: A protective headband or light dressing is applied. You will receive your post-operative kit and detailed care instructions.
Discharge: You will be fully alert. After a final check, you are free to go home via taxi or private transport. The entire process typically takes 6-8 hours for a standard session.
Preparation is key: Follow pre-op instructions on medication, hair care, and lifestyle (smoking, alcohol) to ensure optimal conditions for surgery and healing.
The procedure is an outpatient, conscious surgery: You are awake but relaxed, with pain effectively managed by local anesthesia and oral medication.
Precision technology is standard: We use microscopes, ATP storage, and ultra-fine punches to maximize graft survival and minimize scarring.
You are part of the process: From approving the hairline design to inspecting your grafts, we ensure you are informed and comfortable at every stage.
Safety and comfort are prioritized: Continuous monitoring, regular breaks, and a dedicated team focus on your well-being throughout the day.
