The days following your hair transplant are just as important as the procedure itself. At our Tsim Sha Tsui clinic, we’ve refined our post-operative care protocol based on years of clinical experience and the latest advances in follicular unit extraction (FUE) and implantation techniques. Thanks to modern local anesthesia, minimally invasive methods, and personalized aftercare plans, most patients experience only mild discomfort — and can return to work or light daily routines within 2–3 days.
But true success isn’t just about speed — it’s about protecting your new grafts so they thrive long-term. Below is your evidence-based recovery roadmap.
ACTIVITIES | WHEN TO RESUME AFTER PROCEDURE |
Wearing Hat or Banada | Same Day on Discharge |
Indoor Activities | Next Day (Day 1) |
Shopping, Dining Out | Next Day (Day 1) |
Hair Wash at Home | Day 2 (Day 1 we shampoo for you) |
Travel by Plane | Day 2 (We had patients leaving that same evening) |
Drink Alcohol | Day 2 |
Office Work | Day 2 |
Light Exercise (Tai Chi) | After 1 week |
Golf | After 1 week |
Hair Styling Gel / Spray | After 1 week |
Wearing Hairpiece / Wig | After 1 week |
Resume Minoxidil Lotion | After 10 days |
Moderate Exercise (jogging) | After 2 weeks |
Hair Cut / Dye | After 4 weeks |
Strenous Exercise (weight lifting, soccer) | After 4 weeks |
Swimming (pool or beach) | After 4 weeks |
Sauna | After 3 - 4 months |
Most patients resume desk jobs or remote work as early as Day 2 or 3, especially if their role doesn’t involve physical exertion, heat, or dust exposure.
If you’re concerned about appearance (e.g., visible crusting or redness), consider taking 4–5 days off. By Day 5–7, many patients feel comfortable wearing a loose cap or styling existing hair to camouflage the treated area.
💡 Tip : Schedule your procedure toward the end of the week—so you can rest over the weekend and return Monday with minimal disruption.
Physical activity boosts circulation — but too soon after surgery, it can increase swelling, dislodge grafts, or trigger excessive sweating, which raises infection risk. Follow this phased approach:
❌ Avoid all gym workouts, running, weightlifting, or yoga inversions.
✅ Light walking ( 10–15 mins ) is encouraged to support blood flow.
✅ Gentle stretching, slow walking, or light stationary cycling.
❌ No heavy lifting, jumping, or activities that make you sweat heavily.
✅ Begin low-impact cardio ( e.g., elliptical, light resistance bands ).
❌ Avoid bending forward aggressively ( e.g., deadlifts, toe touches )—this increases scalp pressure.
✅ Gradually resume your normal routine—if healing is on track.
✅ Wear a soft, breathable headband to absorb sweat.
✅ Shower immediately after to gently cleanse the scalp.
🛑 Stop immediately if you feel pulling, throbbing, or see increased redness. When in doubt, check with your surgeon.
Water may seem harmless—but chlorine, salt, bacteria, and submersion pose real risks to fragile grafts during early healing.
❌ Avoid all swimming — pools, sea, hot tubs, saunas. Grafts are still anchoring; water exposure can cause infection or loss.
✅ Short pool sessions only if :
– You wear a silicone swim cap
– You don’t submerge your head
– You rinse scalp thoroughly with fresh water afterward
✅ Swimming in pools or ocean is generally safe.
✅ Always rinse scalp post-swim.
✅ Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen or wear a hat — new skin is highly sun-sensitive.
🌊 Note : Natural bodies of water (ocean, lakes) carry higher bacterial loads than chlorinated pools—proceed with extra caution.
While you may return to work in days, remember: your new hair won’t be visible for 3–4 months, and full results take 12–18 months. The care you give your scalp now directly shapes your final outcome.
It is important that your hair transplant physicians don’t just transplant hair, but partner with you through every stage of recovery.
